Funding cut to cycle trail

A $600,000 cut to spending on the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail is just one of the items on a hit list that the Tasman District Council is considering to reduce its debt from $193 million to between $177-$180 million by the end of the financial year. The council has been holding a series of workshops to discuss cuts to the 20142015 annual plan to reduce debt and this Wednesday the full council is to meet in Richmond to discuss the proposals.

The $600,000 cut from cycle trail’s budget was one of the proposals on the agenda and Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne admits that it could be the most controversial. Richard says the council was committed to completing the final stages of the coastal section of the trail between Mapua and Kaiteriteri, but was reluctant to start the next stage from Wakefield to Dovedale without securing the required funding.

Massive crowd for wine and food fest They came to taste whitebait fritters, drink local wines, dance in the sun – and they came in their droves. A crowd estimated to be between 3500 and 4000 strong attended the returning Brightwater Wine and Food Festival at Middle-Earth Vineyards. With ticket prices reflecting a “back to basics” approach, organisers from the Richmond Rotary Club were thrilled to say that Sunday’s record crowd means the festival is back for good and will return as an annual event. “We wanted to go back to basics with some really good food, really good wine, really good beer and it’s really worked,” says Rotary chairman Peter Glue. “The crowd was so well behaved. Everyone was up dancing and loving it. We’ve proven that this will now be an annual event.”

and reducing contributions to developments at Saxton Field from $600,442 to $350,000, were also on the list. “We need to reduce our reliance on debt to keep the rates increases down,” Richard says. “That means we have had to look at taking out about one third of the capital projects that require debt, so we have been doing a lot of trimming.” However, Richard says three key items have been retained including the $8million Richmond water treatment project, which had to be completed to meet the national

drinking water standards. The $2.997 million Motueka waste water treatment plant and $3.5 million Golden Bay recreational facility also remained fully funded. “It’s imperative we complete the sewage treatment plans because we are failing environmental standards there. We also plan to leave the Golden Bay recreational facility in the plan - we have been committed to that and pulling it out would be a breach of faith.” Council was also planning to discuss a proposal to cut its contribution to Nelson Tasman Tourism to $170,000 in 2014-2015 and cease funding beyond July 1, 2015.

I’ve had two whitebait fritters already and the Middle-Earth wine is just gorgeous.” Money raised from the festival will go towards the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter and to groups in the Brightwater community such as the volunteer fire brigade, Wanderers Rugby Club and others.

Twenty four years to the day after her father passed away, Maria Hart was searching through rubble and ash to see if any of his possessions had survived a garage fire. The garage, filled with camping and hunting gear, family photos, a vehicle and “valuable” family heirlooms, was destroyed in a fire at her Hart Rd property on Sunday. The fire is believed to have started from an incinerator. Roger and Maria were still rummaging through the remains of the shed on Tuesday morning, counting the cost of what had been lost. “I had just come in for a cup of tea and my husband yelled through the window that all my heirloom crystal [had been lost]. Hospital’s ‘white board’ a NZ first An electronic “white board” has been designed for Nelson Hospital’s emergency department, the first of its kind in the country. Traditional white boards were once the centre piece of the emergency department but the new computer programme – called “ED at a Glance” – allows staff to see lists of patients, their symptoms and other relevant information on all ED computers, as well as a large screen. Nelson Hospital emergency department clinical director Dr Tom Morton, says the new system means better efficiency for his staff. “Time is essential in ED, we need to know

who is coming through, who’s looking after them, what’s happening to them, any test results, and where they are in their patient journey. The new system is a truly Nelson innovation. After looking and being unable to find a system that would bring all the data into one place, Dr Morton met with Nelson Marlborough District Health Board IT specialists, Chris Flaherty and Darren Markham, to develop the home-grown ED at a Glance system. The success of the system has now attracted attention from a number of other DHBs and other health sector agencies throughout the country. Richmond launches into Gigatown bid The next time Richmond residents go online Tasman district councillor Judene Edgar is urging them to do something that could benefit the whole community by registering for Gigatown. The telecommunications infrastructure company Chorus has been running the national Gigatown competition for 50 different towns where it is deploying fibre to bring ultra-fast broadband services. Towns can earn points by registering for the competition and then earn more points by using key words or hashtags on their posts on social media sites, with the

winning town receiving a super-fast, one gigabit per second, broadband connection. Although Richmond was 22nd on 4103 points in the competition earlier this week, Judene says it’s not too late to make the top five and qualify for the final. Wanaka was leading the competition on 895268 points, but once the top five teams qualify for the final on September 30 the points will be reset to zero. Judene says there are so many benefits of winning the southern hemisphere’s fastest broadband connec-

School hit by gastro outbreak

Waimea College hope the worst of a suspected Norovirus outbreak is over. Twenty-one teachers had called in sick ahead of Monday morning, with another four going home during the day after developing the illness, which causes nausea, cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting. Principal Larry Ching confirmed the outbreak to Waimea Weekly, and although about a dozen students had gone home due to stomach complaints, he says it has mainly affected the staff. “Which would suggest somewhere like the staff room might be where it originated from.” Larry says “pretty much” all classes were able to be covered by relief teachers or some regular staff doing extra hours. “In some cases we had a double up and if they were senior classes they were just set some work to do. But we didn’t have to do that in many cases and today we had a bit more warning so we knew who was going to be absent.” The closure of Waimea College had not crossed Larry’s mind, and he was hopeful the worst of it was over now anyway. The school emailed parents with guidelines from the Ministry of Health on how to treat the virus, and the importance of hygiene.

Secret compartment reveals family history When Maria Martin bought an antique cabinet at auction in England, it wasn’t because she had an inkling that there might be a secret compartment hidden up the top – but that’s what she ended up getting. It was only when a customer at the Richmond Antique and Curios store noticed the sun had slightly warped the plywood, uncovering family documents dating all the way back to the 1700s, that Maria knew she had struck something significant. “There were two customers looking at it who said they had found some photos in there, and I thought ‘where?’ because it was all taped up shut,” says Maria, the owner of the antique store. “They just lifted it up and I didn’t even think there was anything inside it like a secret compartment.” While it may not have been gold or jewels, which would be typical items hidden away in a compartment like this, Maria says the documents, which include photos, the will of Samuel David, land deeds, undertaker receipts, death notices, a pair of sunglasses and art work, would be hugely valuable to the fam-

BANK HAPPY WITH CLUB: Tahunanui’s Suburban Club has survived a financial scare that threatened to bring it to its knees. The club’s manager, Rob Finlayson, says the board of the club met with its bank last week and was told it was happy with the progress the club has made since its financial position was made public in August last year. The club asked its members to consider digging into their pockets for a $100 donation to help it pay off debts, including to the IRD for unpaid tax. Their response helped the club out of the situation they were in.

One crew of Nelson firefighters is already helping to battle the most dangerous bushfire threat in Australia since the Black Saturday inferno that raged across Victoria in February 2009 and a second crew is on its way leaving Nelson to join the ANZAC fire fighting force this week. Colin Eggers and his team of Peter Henderson, Rex Mitchell, Daniel Pearless and Bruce Hampton arrived in Victoria on February 3, when they joined a contingent of 42 New Zealand fire fighters based at Orbost about four hours drive north of Melbourne. The Waimea Rural Fire Authority volunteers are helping combat a series of bushfires that have burned across 333,000 hectares of Victoria and Colin says it’s been “hard yakka” battling the fires, heat, smoke and steep terrain. “These fires are so huge they’re unbelievable. The destruction is so widespread it looks like an atomic bomb has gone off. “We’ve been putting in containment lines around the Cann River and Bonang Highway. It’s been hard yakka because it’s been so hot and smoky and we are working with hand tools on steep country. “Last Sunday the temperature

The first ever Nelson Motor Show of3252 fered more thanFAX just cars, with gyrocopters, trucks, motorcycles and – well, most things with motors, sprinkled throughout the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. Run by Steve Steele and Rik Thompson, who were both previous committee members of the Nelson Car Show, the Motor Show was certainly popular for petrol heads with an estimated 6000 people coming through and checking out the displays over the two days, according to Steve. The event was kicked off with a super cruise that featured a trail of 207 vehicles on the Friday night, with 317 vehicles going on display at the Saturday show and then 429 on display at the Sunday show. Trade displays, showing “how things work”, and a market with clothing and food stalls were also included this year. Steve says the event will be an annual one, and will again be held at the holiday park, which allowed the show to work as a “little town”. “We filled the grounds and nearly ran out of room, but we might change the way we do things a wee bit,” he says. “But it was the perfect venue and it just turns into a little town with all of the

A $17,000 renovation of a hospital cottage means mothers with new born babies in special care will have a much more comfortable stay. The upgrade was a joint effort between several local Lion clubs, South Pine and the district health board, and was officially blessed and opened last Thursday. The idea for the project started when a DHB staff member emailed a Lions club member to tell them about the Special Baby Care Unit Cottage and its need of a tidy up. Saturday night’s Opera in the Park will be the 15th time it’s been held and musical director Pete Rainey is hoping for some feedback from event-goers as to how it should look in the future. The popular event attracted close to 7000 people to Trafalgar Park in 2013, and with this year’s show headlined by Pene Pati, one of the stars of opera trio Sol 3 Mio, and Egyptian born Soprano Amina Edris, it is expected to draw similar numbers again. While the venue has changed over the 15 years, with shows in Tahunanui and at Saxton Field, the artist budget has generally remained the same, keeping tickets at a reasonably cheap price – this year it will be $15 for an adult and $5 for a child, although booking fees do apply. So Pete is hoping at the end of this year’s show people will let him know, via his email pete. rainey@ncc.govt.nz, if it’s time to perhaps spice up the line-up with even more renowned acts. Frank Saxton will be entering in the Alpine Lodge Club Class Gliding Competition which begins this Sunday.

Gliders fly in for national comp Like a lot of kids, when Frank Saxton was younger he always dreamt of being able to fly. At school he spoke with a career adviser about how he could become a pilot. He didn’t grow up in an aviation family and he didn’t know anyone who did, he just thought the options were to join the New Zealand Air Force or to work for Air New Zealand. But for a number of reasons a career in the sky never worked out for Frank, and it wasn’t until he was semi retired that an older gentleman said “you could learn to fly a glider”. “I thought ‘oh, yeah?’ So I just joined the Nelson Lakes Gliding Club. I was in a pretty unusual situation where I was semi retired and was looking for something to fill the time with a bit of panache,” he says. Frank has now been gliding for 16 years and amassed 1675 landings during that period. He specialises in cross country,

The clouds are low, the mountains are tall and we don’t have a lot of gap to work with. “The only way people stay in the sport is if they keep progressing and go into cross country gliding. A lot of aviation is boring, it’s exciting to learn but once you’ve learnt how to fly you just go in a straight line and land. But when you do cross country soaring, it’s incredibly engaging. You have a job to do, you have to stay alive in the air.” Starting from this weekend, Frank will

be entering in the Alpine Lodge New Zealand Club Class Nationals at St Arnaud, with about 12 to 15 other pilots from all across the country coming to compete. The pilots will travel between 150km and 300km, with a new task being set each day. “Everybody is launched one after another, and ten minutes after that the start gate is open. Everyone is flying with these loggers that record their location. You race alone and try and get back as quick as you can. At the end of the day everybody lands and they work out who did it the fastest.” Gliders can typically reach speeds between 100km/h and 150km/h. Open plan classrooms: Yes, open plan teaching has been around for a long time. I have relieved in open plan teaching classes many times. Education is not static and continues to change with old ideas repackaged under new names. Richard Oakly (via nelsonweekly. co.nz). How does this differ from the open plan approach in the 70’s and 80’s? I recall doing a teaching practice in such a set up in Brighton in Christchurch in 1982 - it was fun - we had 3 teachers and about 80-90 children, another school I taught at in the late 80’s and early 90’s we had a similar set up - three teachers standard 2 - form 2 in those days 3.5 teachers. Your story is about forty plus years behind the times when he writes about the new plan to have what forty years ago was called Open Plan or Variable Space classrooms introduced as “Tomorrows Schools Today” by the late and unlamented David Lange. My late wife Janet was one

of the first teachers to be trained in the proposed use of this system and started the scheme at the Bayview Primary School on Auckland’s North Shore. Eighty plus children and a team of teachers all in one room. The teachers hated it and the kids had a mischief ball. It didn’t last long and it is interesting to see the idea rejuvenated. Janet quit that school in 1982 and we moved to Nelson where she taught at Hira when the school there had only two rooms and only a small handful of pupils. Wilf Tunney. Just a thought Businesses team up for Relay for Life Mainly Music – what does this bring to mind? Well, how about half an hour of music, dance, song, finger rhymes, parachutes, instruments and much more with pre-school children and their mums, grandmothers and caregivers. Does that sound like fun? I tell you it is – from someone in there – say mid to late 40’s – I have the time of my life. Mainly Music – a place of connecting and belonging – a place where mums chat about their new babies and toddlers with other mums, a place for a mum, new to the area, to connect with other mums and children, and in turn families connecting with other families. A place to belong – where a mum feels people are interested in her and her family; who love her and encourage her; who provide something to do, as mum and child; and where there is an atmosphere of fun and acceptance. Does that sound like a great place to be? Yep, I’d say Wendy Milson, Richso. mond Baptist Church. The volunteers who make mainly music operate are from local churches in the area. They are there to make the session happen – to encourage, to listen and offer advice when needed, offer help, support and have someone to cry and laugh with. A group of volunteers who want people to love, and to connect with. Mainly Music – also a place to connect with God: to hear that you are special – there is noone else like you – you are unique; to hear that God is interested in you and your family; to hear that God is not just ‘way up in the heavens’ but also as close as the air you breathe; to hear from the volunteers of what God has done in their lives – the changes that have taken place, the help that is always so close, how chatting to God during the day, any time and any place, helps live life. Being a believer does not make us immune to life’s hiccups – but having God, Jesus and Holy Spirit helping along the way makes it easier to bear. Mainly Music – not just singing and dancing – but connecting to God who is interested in you.

Two Nelson businesses have teamed up for next month’s Relay for Life, and are offering participants and event-goers the opportunity to create their own sterling silver ribbon pendant. simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz Richmond’s oldest water supply, the Reservoir Creek Dam, was officially decommissioned this month marking the end of an era for the town. The dam was constructed by the Richmond Borough Council in the Richmond Hills above Easby Park between 1890 and 1893 to provide reticulated drinking and fire fighting water for the town. A 3.7 metre high log dam initially stored 5.46 million litres of water although this was later increased when the dam was raised to six metres meet the increasing demand for water. Retired Waimea County Council and Tasman District Council Utilities manager Jim Wareing says the dam was Richmond’s primary source of water until the Roding River Dam was constructed 1940s. Jim, who worked for the two councils for 41 years until 2004, says the Reservoir Creek Dam then became redundant in the 1970s when water was pumped from aquifers on the Waimea Plains to reservoirs on the Richmond Hills. But it wasn’t until last week, that the dam has finally been drained after concerns that it had become unsafe and that the spillway was not big enough to handle flood flows. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. culvert installed to lower the water level by 2.5 metres and prevent the old reservoir from filling up again. “There have been a number of reports to do with safety issues about the dam,” Tasman District Council engineer and project manager David Burn says. “It’s had some leaks and it filled right up during the December 2011 floods which was a concern - a slip fell into the reservoir during the floods as well and raised the level of the dam. “The contractors put in a temporary pipe to drain the water and then cut a V out of the dam to put in an open culvert. The original spillway is still there but now the culvert drains the reservoir.” David says the project has improved the ecology of Reservoir Creek as well as its safety. The culvert has special features to

help native fish migrate upstream past the former dam site and structures that slow down the flow and dissipate the energy during flooding. Interestingly, Jim says the safety of the dam has been an issue for a number of years even when it was operational. “It was the Richmond Borough Council’s dam but I remember in the late 1960s they had a problem. They had to cut a slot in the dam and they were filling it with clay bricks to stop a leak.” David says the project was completed last week by contractors Downer and cost $430,000. Council has also purchased the land around the old dam site and is forming a new walking track around the dam because the existing farm track is on private land and has been closed to the public.

Sunday was certainly the biggest day on the Dovedale calendar, with hundreds of people arriving for the annual Country Affair. Whether it was for a donkey ride, to check out vintage traction engines, throw gumboots or to eat the pig on the spit, there was plenty for eventgoers to see and do. While Dovedale is just a small rural town with no shops, money raised from the event goes into a community pot where residents are able to request funds that will benefit the area.

Donna Smithies, one of the organisers, says the event had record participation with 1500 adults estimated to have come through the gates. She says once all of the costs have been covered that about $3000 would have been raised for the community. Another total, which was raised from the school stalls, was unknown. “Overall we hope to have got in excess of $3000 which is great,” she says. “We had way more people than we’ve had before. Just going by the takings we had at least 1500 adults.”

This week I’d like to send out a general warning to people to be wary of people offering to do painting or driveway maintenance and sealing. In the last week we have received reports of what appear to be unscrupulous operators preying on older homeowners in the Nelson Bays area. One couple had a painter do a very poor job on their roof and at the same time several thousand dollars in cash disappeared from their house. Another person has reported having someone offer to seal their driveway for a price well below the going rate. You know the old adage, if it seems too good to be true it probably is. My advice is to be very wary of anyone turning up on the door step and offering services. These people are often well versed at putting pressure on people to get them to agree on the spot to have work done. If you do experience this sort of approach and you feel uncomfortable please call police immediately. If possible get the registration details of any vehicle they are using and ask for a business card. Then you can say you will contact them if you decide to go ahead with any work. When you are engaging any tradesperson to do work for you it is a good idea to ask to see some of their previous work and to speak to customers to see if they were satisfied with the work done and the price paid.

Riwaka grower Steve Thomas just pipped Canaan Balck from Hoddys Orchard on the Waimea Plains in a close contest in the annual Nelson Young Fruit Grower of the Year competition. Six of the best young fruit growers in the Tasman district battled it out against each other in an intense daylong event at Hoddys Orchard last Friday. A series of challenges tested the practical and theoretical skills needed to operate a successful fruit growing business.

Riparian Revegetation Course starts late February - call now! This part-time course will provide the practical tools and knowledge that can be used to create clean waterways and conserve soil by establishing native plants along stream margins, as well as revegetating eroded hillsides. Students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully plan, grow, plant and maintain native species along streams, rivers and lake margins, or on marginal land. While the main focus of this course is working with native plants, propagation strategies learned can also be applied to vegetables, shrubs, trees and garden plants in general. This course will be of great value to: • Farmers and lifestyle block owners who wish to improve their properties by growing and planting trees • Iwi, individuals and groups involved in river restoration • Gardening enthusiasts and school leavers wanting to gain formal qualifications in Horticulture. Topics covered include native plant establishment in fenced off stream margins for water quality enhancement, revegetation of eroding hillsides and marginal land, propagation of plants from seed and cuttings,

seed collection, identification and use of local genotype native plants, weed management and tree planting to enhance water quality and provide shelter and habitat for bees, native bird species and other beneficial insects. Students will learn via interactive and stimulating tutorials one day a week; group discussions; practical activities; and case studies from real-life situations. Both theory and practical assessments will be undertaken in this programme.

Steve, 25, who is a Kiwifruit New Variety Manager and Coolstore Manager for Thomas Bros in Riwaka, won $1500 cash and an orchard study trip to Hawke’s Bay that includes airfares and accommodation He also won a one-day media and presentation course in Wellington and an all-expenses paid trip to Christchurch to compete for the national New Zealand Young Fruit Grower of the Year and Young Grower of the Year awards. “It wasn’t easy going up against the top young fruit growing talent here in

Nelson,” Steve says. “But I’m pleased with my performance and it was a great opportunity to see what we’re all capable of in a fun and testing environment.” “I really had to push myself against these guys, and I’m sure the national competition will present a new set of challenges and give me the chance to develop even further as a young grower.” Steve will go on to compete at the national Young Grower of the Year finals in Christchurch from August 14-15.

World Cup countdown begins

This week marks one year until cricket’s showpiece event rides into town. Nelson’s Saxton Oval will host three games in the ICC Cricket World Cup next year, and to mark the beginning of the tournament a giant cricket ball with a clock was unveiled at 1903 Square last Thursday. The giant clock counts down the

seconds until the tournament and one was unveiled at each of host cities in New Zealand and Australia. The ceremony also marked the opening of ticket sales for the tournament. The first game to be played in Nelson will be on Monday, February 16, between Ireland and the West Indies. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese offi-

cially unveiled the ball which will reside in the customer service centre at Nelson City Council, saying the event was a great chance for local people to head along and be a part of a huge international event. “Even if you’re not cricket fans, this will be a good time to start.” Tickets are as low as $5 for children and $20 for adults.

Waka ama regatta draws record field Waka ama paddlers from the Top of the South jostled for titles in the Tuna e Hoe Ana regatta at Lake Rotoiti at the weekend. Competition was fierce throughout the two-day regatta, which drew a record field of 150 competitors from around the South Island. Crews from Nelson’s Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club won the open men’s, masters men’s and senior masters women’s races in the sixperson waka ama division. Motueka Waka Ama Club crews took out the open women‘s and novice mixed races, while Waikawa Waka Ama Whanau claimed first place in the novice women’s race. The novice races were 10km and

the open, masters and senior masters races 20km. Conditions were ideal for the regatta, with light winds most of the time, except during the single and double waka ama races when the wind became blustery. Motueka paddlers dominated the singles races, with Claire Sykes winning the open women’s division convincingly and Callum Oleary doing the same in the open men’s division. Lee-Anne Edwards and Roni Forsythe tied for first place in the masters women’s division after a thrilling sprint for the finish line. The regatta was organised by the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club.

Racing off to the US It wasn’t Dr Pepper, American hotdogs or the Dallas Mavericks that lured Jeff Lautenslager back to the United States - it was the prospect of becoming a champion runner. Just last week, the 18 year old signed his letter of intent for Boise State University, a mere formality that is basically him saying “yes” and agreeing to their terms of a full scholarship. In August of this year, the Texas born Jeff will leave for Boise in Idaho where he will study graphic design for four years and run on their track and cross country teams. Jeff sees the US college system as the perfect pathway to help him fulfil his dream of becoming more than just a running prospect. “One of the main reasons I wanted to go is just the whole set up there gives you a better chance to make it in the sport,” he says. “There are a lot of examples of athletes who just stay here and they just stay the same, they never improve.”

Generally clocking up 100 kilometres a week for training here in Nelson, Jeff, who is coached by his father Greg, is also looking forward to running around in the new setting of Boise. “It’s going to be awesome. The place I’m going to looks amazing and there’s like 300 miles of trails there that I’ll be running on. The city is amazing.” Jeff ’s older brother Craig is already over the United States, where he too is on a full scholarship and running track. He attends the University of Texas at Arlington, and that would have been Jeff ’s second choice too, but he decided against studying at the same place as his brother. “Me and Craig, we’ve got a great relationship and we’re really good brothers, but I want my own experience separate to his. I already know a lot about UTA so it’d be a lot more excit-

ing at Boise State.” Before leaving for the United States, Jeff will still compete at one more national championship with the New Zealand Track and Field Championship set to be held in Wellington next month. He will compete in the Men’s Under-20 1500m, stepping up from the Men’s 18 grade which he finished second in last year. With a personal best time of 4 minutes 1.44 seconds, he has two goals for the competition, winning the title and breaking the four minute barrier which has eluded him so far. “I really want to win because this is my last nationals and my aim has always been to win a national title.” Jeff ’s current career highlight was breaking the Under-19 1500m record at the Tasman Secondary School Championship last year with a time of 4 minutes 2 seconds. Jeff beat Commonwealth Games prospect Julian Matthews’ record that had stood for a number of years.

A District Branch of Mainland Football

It’s almost football season again for locals and Nelson Bays Football say a huge amount of players are already signing up for an exciting 2014 season. Although the local season doesn’t start until early April you could be forgiven for thinking we’re already in the middle of football season with the English Premier League, Wellington Phoenix and our very own Nelson Falcons in the middle of their seasons. Locally, Nelson Bays Football – the organisation that runs the sport in the region – says there’s plenty going on at all levels of the game. “Developing youth is a big part of what NBF is all about, and it’s great to see the Falcons playing so well in only their second season,” says NBF’s general manager Clive Beaumont. “The Falcons are now the pinnacle for youth players to strive for and it completes their footballing pathway within the district.” The first step on that pathway is the federation talent centre which began at the Avery Playing Field earlier this month, and was led by a stellar cast of coaches with Mark Johnston, Andy Morris and Ben Wright taking proceedings alongside George Campbell. Steve Clarke will also come into the fray and hopefully Davor Tavich will work alongside the older age group players during the course of the year.

As the district branch of the Mainland Federation, Nelson Bays Football has a job to develop the talented players in the region and give them every opportunity to achieve within the game, says Clive. “The idea at the talent centre is we have the best coaches with the best players, allowing those committed to learn the technical skills in the game to become the best they can be, whether that is playing in the Na-

Nelson wins Mahar Cup Athletics Nelson dominated Saturday’s 78th Mahar Cup meet, with its athletes taking out 48 of the 57 events. Nelson clocked up 380 points at the meet, which was held at Saxton Oval, to beat the visiting Marlborough (101) and West Coast (70) teams. While athletics is an individual sport, points are tallied for the top three place getters in each event. The four records went to Nelson’s Phil Costley in the Open Men’s 3000m (8min 53.82sec), Dale Pritchard in the Open Men’s shot put (15.91m), Mike Lowe in the Junior Men’s 1500m (4 mins 0.18 seconds), and Blenheim’s new sprint sensation, Lucy Sheat, in the Girls 16 (25.41sec).

Having whipped Wanderers 51-22 in last year’s Car Company Nelson Bays Division One Championship final, and with the women’s team collecting their fifth consecutive title, the atmosphere across Waimea Old Boys is at an all-time high. There is no doubting that Waimea was the top club across the region last year, although it did fall short in a bid for an unprecedented three titles, with the Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys division two side losing a tightly fought final 12-11 to Murchison. If you’re doing that right at club level then they’d do alright in the next grades and so on.” The upcoming senior season will begin on March 22, and pre-season training has already begun at Jubilee Park. There are some new faces in the squads, which will all have the same coaches in 2014, with a few Waimea College students stepping up to senior rugby and some players joining up from out of town. We’ve still got the core of the squad, and a few players have either come into town or are still coming into town. Hopefully it all comes together.” Waimea Old Boys will host it’s club day on May 17, with all of the senior teams – division one, two and women’s – competing at Jubilee Park on the same afternoon, as well as most JAB teams in the morning, if not all of them. And it’s not just the seniors tasting success. Waimea Old Boys boasts the largest JAB numbers in the region with nearly 200 kids across 18 teams playing rugby for the club in 2013. JAB chairman Jeremy Salton is looking forward to another successful year with the club’s budding stars, and is encouraging new players to join on the two registration days on March 4 and 6 between 6-7:30pm at the Jubilee Park clubrooms. “It was

huge last year with 18 teams. We’re the biggest club in the region for JAB,” he says. “We’re a very community based club with a lot of volunteers that give back through coaching, the committee and everything. The main goal at the end of it is to have the kids going away with a smile on their face, and quite a few of our teams did quite well last year too.” The grades range from Under-6 through to the intermediate which is basically an Under-13 grade. From there, rugby players play for their secondary schools until returning to the club scene for senior rugby. Each junior grade has around “two to three teams”, Jeremy says, and those are often divvied up depending on which school the players go to. Waimea Old Boys is also looking for more junior coaches ahead of the season which begins at the start of May.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Tasman Bay been blessed some absolutely stunning weather as of late. Sea conditions have been at there best and settled weather looks like it’s here for at least another week, so make the most of it while it lasts. Rat kingfish seem to have taken over the bay, with many anglers reporting encounters with them. They have been caught on Kahawai lures, baits on the setline, found in nets and taking tuna lures. While most of them are as big as the larger Kahawai around the 50cm and not legal to take they are a heap of fun to catch. The legal size for kingfish is 75cm. This looks great for the future fishery and is probably a result of more fish spawning in the bay especially round the spat mussel farm. The larger models have been hanging around the spat farm and Boulder Bank and Separation Point but not in the quantities of previous seasons. Another species that is also quite prolific at the moment is the John Dory. Quite a few have been caught in recent weeks. The best way to target them is with live bait on the sea floor. When anchored up fishing for other species try using a jack mackerel or spotty as live bait on a flasher rig and you might be pleasantly surprised at the result. Delaware and Cable Bays are still producing plenty of Gurnard as well as some nice Blue Cod and snapper. The Snapper should have finished spawning and come hard on the bite anytime. Fishing for them has been hard over the last month or so but is typical for this time of year and catching them is very sporadic. The best way to find out when they are back in business will be word of mouth around town. It never ceases to amaze me how many people in Nelson take an interest in the fishing scene, and are keen to find out what’s been going on and where. Once the first story gets out, most

Tuna are now on both sides of the bay out at the 40m mark. As mentioned earlier there are a lot of small Kingies around and they also love the lures so some patience is required to get through them. There have been reports of 50 cm plus Blue cod being caught at the top of D’urville but don’t forget to take into account where you will be transporting and landing your fish. Check the regulations on the taking of Blue Cod and adhere to them. Another thing to take into account with Blue Cod slot fishery is that, if you have caught your fish say early in the day, put them on ice in the chilli bin, and then don’t get back to the boat till mid afternoon. Be aware that the fish can potentially shrink up to 1cm during this time and when measured again, are not legal. This could be a problem when trying to explain your catch to an MPI fisheries officer at the boat ramp. The simplest way to avoid this is to make sure your fish are not exactly on the 30cm mark and more in the mid 30cm range to save yourself some unwanted grief at the end of the day.

Notice of intention to grant leases of part Tasman District Council land on Kina Peninsula

Do you pay your rates by instalment?

Notice is hereby given of the Tasman District Council’s intention to consider granting five leases for the purposes of establishing boat sheds on land at Kina Peninsula known as “LEH Baigent Reserve”. In mid 2013, Carter Holt Harvey undertook a tender to sell this land on Kina Peninsula. The land in question is known as Part Lot 76 DP 427 (Title Reference/CFR – NL9C/707). Council was approached by a group of local residents with a proposal for a contribution to be made towards the potential purchase price for the land. The residents would contribute a substantial sum of money that would allow Council to put in a tender for the purchase of the property. A condition of that contribution would be that, in the event the Council succeeded in winning the tender, Council would commence a public consultation process regarding a proposal to grant leases to five of the residents (the contributors) who contributed significantly to the purchase price. If approved, the leases would provide for the establishment of boat sheds on a small part of the land proposed for purchase. Council was successful in winning the tender and now owns the land in fee simple (freehold). Council gives formal notice of an intention to grant five leases to the contributors. The leases will be for a term of 35 years (less 1 day), at a nominal rental. The purpose of the leases will be to establish boat sheds. The maximum size of each boat shed building will be 55m2, with a maximum lease area (including water tank, roof area, and sealed yard) of 100m2 per lease. Should the leases be granted, the establishment of the physical buildings will still be subject to building and resource consent requirements. The area proposed to be set aside for this purpose is approximately 1000m2 to allow for some “common land”, plus space between individual lease areas. Each prospective tenant will be able to choose a location of up to 100m2 within the general location indicated by the 1000m2. Council is entering the decision making process with no pre-determination. The contributors know that the grant of the leases is not assured. Persons with an interest in this issue are encouraged to make submissions in the knowledge that they will be considered fully. Please indicate in your submission if you also wish to formally present your submission at a hearing.

Invoices for the third rates instalment for the 2013/2014 year have been sent out. If you are paying your rates by instalment and have not received your invoice please call the Council. Proposed Navigation Bylaws and Moorings Review: Update The Council is seeking feedback on the proposed replacement of the existing Navigation Safety Bylaw with a set of Navigation Bylaws (incorporating maritime facility bylaws) as well as possible changes to the mooring rules in the Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP). The bylaw review affects a wide range of boating activities and navigational matters, while the TRMP review looks at where moorings are located and how they can be better managed. The consultation period opened on 6 January 2014 and closes on 28 March 2014. Information on the proposed changes to both the Bylaw and TRMP can be accessed on the Council’s website (www.tasman.govt.nz/consultations) or you can request hard copies from info@tasman.govt.nz. The website contains the Statement of Proposal –Navigation Bylaws (2014), the Discussion Paper on the Review of Mooring Management and the relevant feedback forms. A series of public workshops are being held around the District in early March to help people understand the proposed changes, answer questions people may have, assist with submissions and refine the proposed changes. The workshops will focus on changes to the coastal rules. The navigation bylaw review also affects boating activities on rivers and lakes. If there is sufficient interest Council will also hold a specific workshop on these proposed changes.
